Process of Grief

Grieving is often not easy in today’s society however it is important to support each other in such actions. Grief is a process, not a state. It takes time to work through as grief is a natural response to the loss of a loved one.

These factors may influence feeling such as:

  • Being in a state of shock
  • Expressing our emotions
  • Feeling depressed and very lonely
  • Displaying of physical symptoms of distress
  • Feelings of panic
  • Feelings of guilt
  • Unable to return to usual acitivities

Those grieving generally go through some or all of these feelings before reaching the feeling of hope gradually coming through.

How to help someone who is grieving

When someone is grieving, there are some needs which they may require. These may include:

  • To feel supported. We must understand that bereavement raises many emotions and that those who are grieving require caring love, support and understanding.
  • To face the reality. The process of recovery is directly linked with the acceptance of loss. This acceptance will not come until the reality of the loss is recognised.
  • To express their feelings. It is important to allow those grieving to release their emotions. They should be helped and encouraged to release such emotions.
  • To re-establish one’s self. Life is an on-going process. This process of re-establishment may take weeks, months or even years, however the process is made easier through love and support of close family and friends.
